When I look back at my journey, one word comes to mind: “integral.” My experience with the Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) began in the 6th grade, surrounded by older students whose enthusiasm and success stories made me eager to join. From the start, it was clear that LPP was more than just a school activity; it was a community, a support system, and a launchpad for future leaders.
My initial impressions were shaped by the welcoming environment and the open-door policy that made it easy to seek support whenever needed. As I progressed from middle to high school, the level and intensity of services offered by LPP increased, adapting to my evolving needs. In middle school, the focus was on emotional support and academic guidance. In high school, it shifted towards college and career readiness, providing me with invaluable resources and connections. This gradual intensification of support played a crucial role in my personal and academic growth.
Throughout my time with LPP, I had the opportunity to take on several leadership roles. I became an ambassador for the program, helping to guide 8th graders through their transition to high school and advocating for student issues within the district. I also participated in Advocacy Day, speaking to legislators about the importance of the program. These experiences helped me develop my leadership skills and understand the importance of being a voice for my community.
A standout moment for me was when we visited Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital to create gift bags for patients. This hospital held personal significance for me, as I had been a patient there during a near-fatal illness. The opportunity to give back to a place that had been part of my own healing journey was incredibly meaningful and solidified my commitment to service and philanthropy.
LPP also played a significant role in my academic journey. I received numerous scholarships from Binghamton High School, which made college more accessible. The program’s college tours, financial aid workshops, and academic support prepared me for the rigors of higher education. I chose to attend Medaille College, where I was enrolled in a fast-track 3+3 program with Buffalo Law, largely thanks to the foundation laid by LPP. In May of 2024 I graduated summa cum laude with my Bachelor's Degree in criminal justice from SUNY Buffalo State. I'm currently enrolled at the University of Buffalo School of Law.
Navigating college came with its own set of challenges, particularly combatting stereotypes as a Black woman. LPP taught me how to advocate for myself and navigate environments where implicit biases might be present. This resilience and self-advocacy have been crucial in my college experience.
Working as summer staff for LPP further developed my management and leadership skills. I transitioned from a Teen Leader to a Senior Leader and eventually to a Supervisor. These roles equipped me with workforce development skills that are invaluable, even though my career aspirations lie in law. The emphasis on understanding the psychology of young minds and leading teams has been instrumental in shaping my approach to leadership.
Inspired by my experiences, I recently co-founded The IDEAS Foundation (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, Social Justice) with my mentor. Our foundation focuses on empowering individuals reentering society by providing education, support, and leadership opportunities.
My involvement with LPP has been integral to my personal growth. The exposure to diverse experiences and the skills I acquired through the program have prepared me for various challenges. I realized the full impact of the program during my first year of college, where I found myself ahead of the curve, equipped with skills that many of my peers had not been exposed to.
Looking ahead, my goal is to become a civil litigator and continue my nonprofit work. The skills and experiences gained from LPP have laid a strong foundation for these aspirations. I also plan to stay involved with LPP, supporting future generations through scholarship donations and mentorship.
To current students in the program, my advice is simple: take full advantage of everything LPP has to offer. The program is a treasure trove of opportunities and support that can significantly impact your life.
Reflecting on my journey, I am grateful for the integral role that LPP has played in my success. It exposed me to a world of possibilities and equipped me with the tools to navigate my path confidently. My experience with LPP has been nothing short of transformative, and I am committed to giving back and supporting the program that has given me so much.
